Anti-Aging Car Care Tips for your Car

A car is the second most valuable investment next to homes. Its purchase and maintenance cost can be quite overwhelming, that’s why it’s important to be knowledgeable and innovative in making the car efficient and in good condition over the long haul.

3M Car Care offers tips to make your car look and run smoothly for as long as possible:

1.   During the break-in period (the first 1,600 km), keep your speed under 88 kph or to the speed recommended by the manufacturer.

2.   Do not race your car’s engine during start-up as it will wear out your engine; accelerate slowly when you drive. Shift to neutral at red lights.

3.   Keep an auto log where you can record your gas fill-ups and mileage. If you notice your gas mileage changing for the worse, have your car checked. It may be an early warning sign that something is wrong with it.

4.   Check tire pressure. Improperly inflated tires can greatly reduce fuel economy and lead to excessive tire wear. The correct tire pressure also will guard against tire blowouts and provide a safer ride.

5.   Check the oil. Oil keeps the engine lubricated, reduces friction and makes everything run efficiently. Change the oil every 3000 miles or three months for maximum performance and extended engine life.

6.   Maintain your car’s fluid levels. It can add thousands of miles to the life of the car. Locate the washer fluid and coolant containers under the hood and check their levels. Make sure they’re OK, especially if you regularly travel long distances or are planning a road-trip.

7.   Always park in the shade when you can. If you can’t, use a car shade to protect your car’s interiors. The sun’s rays are harmful to leather fittings, some upholstery and other gizmos inside your car. They also break down your car’s paint and cause it to fade.

8.   Vacuum and sponge car interiors when you wash your car. Get rid of abrasive dirt particles and soda spills which can be corrosive. Use a soft, damp cloth to wipe dust off the dashboard, door interiors and dash gauges.

9.   Rust-proof and protect your car’s under-chassis from floods and other causes that create rust. Invest in some matching touch-up paint or bring your car to a detailer so you can touch up minor nicks before rust has a chance to form.

10.  Do the work. Give your car a good bath with 3M™ Car Care Auto Shampoo and remove dirt and grime without removing wax protection.  Wash & dry vehicle with 3M™ PN1052 Super Absorbent Car Wipe to protect its surface.

11.  Clean wheels and tires with 3M™ Wheel & Tire Cleaner to remove brake dust and highway grime.

12.   Restore black plastic bumpers, door handles and tires to brand new finish with 3M™ Tire Restorer. Just spray on and wipe off for a deep black luster.

13.   Remove surface scratches with 3M™ Swirl Mark Remover in sachet. This new product reduces swirl marks and scuffs in the paint like magic.  For deeper scratches use 3M™ Scratch Remover in 8 oz bottle. It actually removes surface scratches quickly and easily and doesn’t just fill them in with wax.

14.  Give the car a good protective coat of 3M™ Performance Finish Synthetic Wax.  This innovative synthetic wax, which chemically bonds with clear coat finishes, keeps the car’s finish looking good through up to 15 to 20 washes. It’s simple to apply and doesn’t haze. Just wipe on and wipe off in minutes with 3M™ Microfiber Detail Cloth (PN 39016) and don’t worry; it won’t leave a residue left in the cracks and crevices.

15.  Get the glass clean inside and out with 3M™ Glass Cleaner. It has a unique vertical cling that prevents drips and is safe to use on glass, plastic, chrome, metal and painted surfaces.

16   Protect the upholstery with 3M™ Leather and Vinyl Restorer, which revives the natural sheen and soft feel of the factory finish.

17.   For quick detailing or touch up of exterior surfaces, use 3M™ Quick Wax which can treat an entire vehicle in a just a few minutes.  This can be applied wet (after washing vehicle with 3M™ Car Care Auto Shampoo) or dry.  Spray on wax and wipe dry with 3M™ Microfiber Detail Cloth (PN 39016).

With these simple do-it-yourself maintenance projects and just a few hours’ investment, you can make your car look years younger, use it longer, and improve its value.

Be alert this Dengue Season

Dengue is and has always been a big problem in the Philippines. Yet, after 60 years since the first outbreak, there is still no known cure. In fact, the virus might even be getting worse. Today, a new species of Dengue mosquito exists. Aedes albopictus is known to bite during nighttime, while the original mosquito, Aedes aegypti, is known to only bite during the day.

Both mosquitoes are native to tropical and subtropical areas of Southeast Asia. They like to live close to humans because they are attracted to the chemical compounds human beings emit. Thus, it comes as no surprise that they breed and lay eggs in places near or inside homes, particularly in areas with stagnant water. The mosquitoes’ constant contact with bacteria makes them prime vehicles for transferring diseases like Dengue into humans.

The bite of the Aedes Dengue mosquito can cause symptoms like fever, rashes, severe headaches, nausea, vomiting, body pain, bleeding, and even death. With now two species of dangerous mosquitoes on the loose, it is more important than ever to be on alert when protecting loved ones from this deadly disease. But without a cure, the best defense against Dengue is prevention.

Stanhome World, the No. 1 Direct-Selling Home Care Company in the European Union, shares surefire ways to avoid getting Dengue during this rainy season:

1.    Eliminate the mosquitoes’ breeding places.
The Department of Health says Dengue cases abound in suburban communities where junk shops, vulcanizing shops, tires on tops of roofs, backyard piggeries, and underdeveloped subdivisions become natural breeding grounds for mosquitoes.  Stop them from breeding by discarding all forms of stagnant water from jars, bottles, drums, auto tires, flower/plant pots, trash cans, coconut husks and other materials that collect rain or run-off water. Also, check the gutter and canals in your home and clean them thrice a week to remove water deposits.

 2.    Don’t give mosquitoes access to your home.
Prevent mosquitoes from coming inside the house by adding screens to your windows and doors. Better yet, safeguard your home with Citronella. This substance has a scent that is known to effectively repel mosquitoes and other insects, keeping them from coming near. STANHOME Banish Citronella is an Odor Neutralizer which keeps out mosquitoes while taking away the bad odors from inside and outside your home. If you want the indoors to be both protected and fresh-smelling, use STANHOME Stan-wick Citronella, a Home Deodorizer that emits a clean and fresh Citronella scent that welcomes your guests and rejects the pests.

3.    Protect yourself
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are known to attack in the daytime, so it is important to keep your body protected when you leave the house. Wear light-colored, long sleeved shirts or jackets, socks, long pants, and other garments that will cover your skin. If you can’t avoid using shorts or short-sleeved tops, rub insect repellent all over your exposed skin. STANHOME Insect Repellent Gel creates a protective barrier on the skin, repelling insects and mosquitoes for at least 7.5 hours. It’s dermatologically-tested, and is safe enough to be applied on one’s face.

With all this information in mind, you can be secure that you and your family are protected from the perils of Dengue. Put them into practice, and you’re sure to enjoy a worry-free, dengue-free life.

The Right Tires can Save You Fuel

Getting the best deal out of driving your car can be had if you know the right ways of taking care of your baby on wheels. And one way is to fit your vehicle with the right type of tires, and this can really help you save on gas and bring more mileage to your ride. MICHELIN tires offer you some tips that can make you get the most of your car.

Make sure your tires are properly inflated
Under-inflated tires have higher rolling resistance, and waste more fuel. Rolling resistance is the amount of force required for a tire to move at a constant speed. Make it a practice to check your tire pressure at least once every month to improve gas mileage by more than 3 percent. Remember to let the tires cool down before taking measurements to avoid getting a false reading, since heat increases pressure.

Go easy on the accelerator and brakes
Sudden acceleration consumes a lot of gas, and so does sudden braking. When approaching a red light, keep your foot away from the accelerator pad and instead keep a slow speed and a considerable distance from other cars, so you don’t slam on the brakes at the last minute. Decelerating keeps your car’s inertia (since you did not come to a full stop) and thus you don/t have to gather as much speed when traffic moves again.

Lose the excess baggage
A loaded car burns more fuel. As much as possible, do not store heavy equipment, tools, and other unnecessary items in your trunk. Even the extra luggage on top of the roof increases the wind resistance of your car and makes it use up more gas. Be bright, go light.

Windows up, windows down
Know how to use the car air conditioner wisely. Turning off the air conditioner and rolling down the windows when driving at a low speed gives you a bonus mile per gallon of gas. And surprise, surprise! Keeping the air conditioner on while driving at high speed actually improves fuel economy.

Switch to MICHELIN fuel-efficient tires
Select a good type of tires to use on your vehicle, considering factors such as city driving, off-road driving, weather conditions like the summer or rainy seasons, the make of your car(SUV, sedan or truck). Fuel-efficient tires have excellent tread depth for lower rolling resistance, better braking and handling, and reduce the heat generated from driving.

MICHELIN offers a wide range of tires that can cater to these needs, and delivers top-quality products that always deliver safety, fuel efficiency and long-lasting tires. You can even check what type of tire will best suit your specifications. Visit www.michelin.com.ph for more information.

Dedicated to the improvement of sustainable mobility, Michelin designs, manufactures and sells tires for every type of vehicle, including airplanes, automobiles, bicycles, earthmovers, farm equipment, heavy-duty trucks and motorcycles. Michelin employs 115,000 people, has sales organizations in more than 170 countries and operates 69 production sites in 18 countries throughout five continents. The company also publishes travel guides, hotel and restaurant guides, maps and road atlases and offers electronic mobility support services, on ViaMichelin.com. Research and innovation development is being taken care of in technology centres in Asia, Europe and North America.

MICHELIN and Audi: pioneers of hybrid technology in motorsport

Six years after taking diesel technology to the top of the podium at the Le Mans 24 Hours, Audi and its partner MICHELIN have now won the world’s most famous endurance racing together using diesel/electric hybrid technology, the local Michelin office announced. André Lotterer, Marcel Fassler and Benoît Tréluyer won the 80th edition of the French race driving the N°1 Audi R18 e-tron quattro.

As winner of the inaugural Le Mans 24 Hours in 1923, MICHELIN had a clear mission for the competition’s 80th edition: to support the bid of its partners Audi and Toyota to race hybrid technology in world class motorsport. MICHELIN’s response to that challenge was the development of a brand new range of tyres, including a new ‘slick/intermediate’ solution for the LMP1 prototypes.

The action during the race’s first six hours showcased the Audi R18 e-tron quattro, the R18 ultra and the Toyota TS030 Hybrid before the Japanese make’s return to Le Mans – after a 13-year absence – was prematurely terminated by a variety of incidents. With all four of its prototypes still running, Audi only had to finish to collect the brand’s 11th victory at Le Mans.

The result produced the fifth all-Audi/MICHELIN podium at the French race since 2000, while MICHELIN took its score to a record-breaking run of 15 consecutive successes since 1998.

MICHELIN also dominated the LMGTE Pro and LMGTE Am classes. In the former, its partners Corvette, Aston Martin and Ferrari took turns to lead, although victory finally went to the N°51 AF Corse Ferrari of FISICHELLA/BRUNI/VILANDER. The LM GTE category was won by the N°50 Larbre Competition Corvette, ahead of the N°67 IMSA Porsche. Both two hold special importance for MICHELIN inasmuch as they enable a direct carryover of technologies developed in racing to its road tyres.

This weekend saw MICHELIN lay the foundations for the future of motorsport, too, through its involvement with the futuristic Nissan-DeltaWing prototype which was invited to contest the 2012 Le Mans 24 Hours in the ‘experimental’ class.

To equip this unique car, MICHELIN’s engineers developed specific, revolutionary front tyres just 10cm wide and weighing only 5kg each, which are twice as durable yet capable of safely reaching speeds of more than 300kph. The Nissan-DeltaWing succeeded in regularly lapping faster than the target time established by the ACO (race organisers) before being edged off the track by another car on its 76th lap.

Why WEAR CHARLIE?

The Designer and Her Style

Jessica Gallegos, Wear Charlie's Designer, showcased her collections
during the Puzzle Mansion launch in Tagaytay City.
She is wearing her sister's designed shoes from Angel Ell'Aire.

Born and raised in the Philippines, Jessica Gallegos, comes from a family of 12. Having started commercial modeling at a young age, performing in theatre, singing and hosting the children’s junior Probe team “5 and up”, she has become exposed to the field of arts. After majoring in Early Childhood Education at University Asia and the Pacific, she migrated to New York and pursued her career as a teacher. With much love for the arts, she studied make up and ventured into styling.
Her love for fashion is an everyday love affair even at a young age. It became apparent that this love translated to another hobby, designing clothes. From there it became a brand that is now called Wear Charlie- a one stop shop where you can pick clothes of your own liking and taste while having the luxury of being styled by the owner herself.
Jessica’s ease in knowing what looks good on a person is her forte. Combined with her eye for understated elegance and her unique sense of what works on your body, she can transform any garment you wear into a stand out outfit. See for yourself the pieces she has created and what else is in store for Wear Charlie.

Who’s Charlie?

Wear Charlie is a character I created to represent my personal style.  It features ready-to-wear clothes I designed and a styled collection I hand picked and put together myself. Also, part of the brand’s services is doing custom made designs for its clients.  Some of the clients I have designed for are notable celebrities like Danica Sotto-Pingris and Kristine Hermosa for their special events and TV guestings.
I design clothes for pregnant women, daywear and evening wear, and the whole collection is categorized according to themes.  These themes represent my different style moods. (Read more about my themes in the shop section). This allows Wear Charlie guests to choose what they feel like wearing and shop freely exploring their own sense of style.
Wear Charlie also does styling for its celebrity and non-celebrity clients for their events, guestings and their special occasions.  (Contact Wear Charlie for more details: http://www.wearcharlie.com/)

Puzzle Mansion Bed n’ Breakfast -- Home of World’s Biggest Puzzle Collection – launched in Tagaytay City

Nestled in the Tagaytay hills is a well-kept secret -- a bed and breakfast with a special magnetic attraction : the biggest collection of rare and popular puzzles of a wide range of sizes, genres, sources, subject matter and art forms.

The rooms themselves are a strong come-on : each one is well-appointed, with first-class furnishings and amenities. Each high-ceilinged haven is meticulously put together, down to the bed sheets, art work and colourful topiaries that adorn many rooms.

Spread over a more than one-hectare property, this new tourist destination in Tagaytay City also has a 400-square meter function room that can accommodate 400 guests, a spa, an infinity pool, a 24-hour café, cable TV connections and a wifi hot spot for net activity. All these are set against a scenic backdrop of grass and a colourful riot of wild flowers growing in abundance. And of course, there is the cool, kind weather of Tagaytay.

But the heart of this new bed and breakfast is its huge puzzle collection. Already a shoo-in for the Guinness Book of World Records, the puzzles are a labor of love of the owner’s mother, Georgina Gil Lacuna, and the inspiration for the place.  Each day the collection grows, as Ms. Lacuna, lovingly fits hundreds of tiny pieces together to complete an art work. The result is an art gallery of puzzles with over a million pieces – many of which are of art whose originals can only be found in the Louvre, the Prado and other world famous galleries.

The Bed and Breakfast, by the way, is aptly named : The Puzzle Mansion. Because of its homespun but classy charm, the Bed and Breakfast is expected to be booked solid (there are 3000 beds-and-breakfast in Tagaytay), but the puzzle gallery itself will be the main attraction that will draw visitors to Puzzle Mansion.

Over 300 jigsaw puzzles make up the collection in the Puzzle Room. It still grows by the day, as the puzzle hobbyist continues to add new and bigger pieces to challenge herself and make a bid for Guinness Book of World Records recognition. She is currently working on a 32,000-pieces puzzle, the largest-size jigsaw puzzle worldwide. Her closest competitor, also a woman, is based in Brazil, with 238 jigsaw puzzles in her collection.

Puzzle Mansion's Function Room could accommodate 400 person.  They also accept catering services.
Puzzle Mansion was launched to the media on May 24, 2012 at an afternoon garden affair at its location in Cuadra St., Bgy. Asisan, Tagaytay City. The launch had a unique highlight : the unveiling of young designer Jessica Gallegos’ new floral fashion collection for her brand Wear Charlie. The floral prints and summer colors of the collection were inspired by the blushing hues of the Tagaytay blooms and named after the Rooms at the Puzzle Mansion : Lilac, Cosmos, Marigold, Gardenia, Passion Flower, Water Lily, Tulip, Sunflower, Sampaguita and Zinnia.

“The Bed and Breakfast is now open for occupancy. We also invite schools, offices, groups and individuals to visit our Puzzle Museum for something nice and different,” says Gino Orda, Puzzle Mansion owner.

Happy feet, happy body

It is a little known fact that our feet are a bundle of nerves–literally.

According to Ancient Chinese medicine, the sensory nerves of internal organs spread throughout the body are mainly gathered around the soles of the feet. One such nerve point is the solar plexus, which is like a little warehouse where all the stress is stored. When this point is pressed on, stress is released and the body is renewed. The saying, “a little bit goes a long way” has never rung truer than for the foot and its functions. Sadly, despite this little tidbit of information, many people still neglect their feet.

Studies have shown that most people do not seek treatment for their feet, because they immediately assume that foot pain is normal. Lack of good foot care, coupled with a strenuous daily load (imagine carrying your weight through an average of 8000-10,000 steps daily), make your foot the body part most vulnerable to injury.

Like any high performance machine, your feet need to be looked after often to function properly. Pay attention to their needs and care for them regularly, otherwise they might rebel and break down on you. Stanhome World Philippines, a trusted Home Care brand in Europe for over 80 years, offers these feet-loving tips to keep you walking healthy and comfy:

1. Inspect your feet regularly.  Dry and cracked skin on your feet, if ignored and untreated, can become uncomfortable and painful. Use STANHOME FOOT REPAIR, a fast-acting treatment gel that helps repair cracked feet. Working in as fast as 15 minutes, FOOT REPAIR can smoothen even the driest, most cracked heels.

2. Moisturize your feet. Just like skin on any other body part, the skin on your feet deserves to be nourished. Wash your feet every day in warm water mixed with mild soap. This cleans feet gently without drying. For a more thorough moisturizing experience, try STANHOME COOL FEET, a refreshing lotion designed to soothe and nourish your feet.

3. Trim your toenails regularly.  Excessively long toenails can become painful to walk in. Don’t cut them too short, in corners or on the sides. Doing so can lead to an ingrown problem, where a part of the nail gets embedded onto your skin.

4. Wear comfortable, properly-fitted shoes. Ill-fitting shoes can cause blisters, cuts and calluses. Don’t believe what they say about shoes becoming more comfy through time. If it hurts when you’re fitting it, it’s probably not the shoe for you.

5. Exfoliate your feet. Regular exfoliation keeps feet clean, smooth, and can even reduce the possibility of getting calluses. STANHOME DEEP EXFOLIATION is a foot scrub that helps remove rough skin and dead skin cells, making your feet softer and smoother.

6. Make a habit of wearing shoes alternately. Changing footwear every now and then discourages bacteria from living in your shoes, protecting you from itchiness and bad odors. Use STANHOME PEDI-MIST, a foot odor-fighting cream with Grapefruit Seed Extract and Lemongrass Oil. It has antibacterial properties that help kill 99.999% of odor-causing microorganisms, leaving feet smooth and fresh-smelling.

7. Consult a doctor. If there’s anything different on your foot – discolored nails, unnatural hardness or thickness in skin, etc. – or if you feel any sort of pain, it is best to go to a podiatric doctor for a diagnosis.  It is always best to ask an expert to help you out, especially when it comes to your health.

Stanhome World Philipines celebrates a year of earning mothers’ trust

Mothers are the toughest customers around. Meticulous and discriminating, these women believe that their homes and families deserve only the best. It takes a lot to earn a mother’s trust.

Carmina Villarroel is no exception.  Despite being an accomplished movie star, TV host and businesswoman, Carmina is a Mom first and foremost who personally oversees the needs of her family.  She considers herself an expert in cleaning, fixing, and organizing her home, a skill she has honed since she was young and fighting the dust that causes her allergies. “I learned early on to make sure that every room and surface in the house is germ and dust-free,” Carmina says. “To provide a healthy home and the best care for your family, you have to use the best products.”

She’s a cautious Mom. Carmina searched far and wide for topnotch home solutions, and found Stanhome World, a trusted Home Care brand in Europe for over 80 years. Stanhome World was launched exactly one year ago in the Philippines and offers a wide range of high-quality Home Care products that have been tested and proven to be effective. Carmina is one of the brand’s biggest fans.

“Stanhome has a complete line of home care products to clean the home. They meet my strict standards in caring for my family,” she says.

She says two of her favourites are the dish-cleaning power duo of Magic Spiral and Degreaser. “I love Magic Spiral because it not only removes the dirt and oil from dishes without scratching them, it doesn’t attract germs and bacteria like a regular sponge.” Carmina recommends using Magic Spiral -- a tough nickel-chrome-and copper scrub that is tough but gentle -- with Degreaser, a fresh-smelling formula that removes grease effectively – even in cold water. “They make a great kitchen cleaning team,” she says.

Carmina also raves about other kitchen helpers: Clear the Air Refrigerator Deodorizer and Catcher Gel Hardened Grease Remover (They’re “so easy to use!”); bathroom cleaners (Active WC Toilet Bowl Cleaner is “super effective”), and air fresheners (“Stan-wick Pine is a must-have for the home because it makes the whole house smell clean and good.”)

The hardworking mother of two first tried Stanhome products a year ago and became one of Stanhome’s many fans. Stanhome World Philippines started out in the country in March 2011 with just six branches. It now boasts of a nationwide presence with 13 service centers scattered all over Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

As Stanhome celebrates its first anniversary, Stanhome World Philippines President Ina Quiogue says the company hopes to reach out to more Filipino mothers through its commitment to putting the family first. “Our company motto is “Changing lives”, and we are dedicated to helping mothers make their lives easier nationwide. Each Stanhome product underwent extensive research and the strictest testing to match Mom’s high standards. The product benefits are personally demonstrated by Stanhome representatives to show mothers how amazing Stanhome products really are.”

Ms. Quiogue is happy that once they saw the results for themselves, Stanhome World Philippines was able to gain the trust of Filipino mothers all over the country.
